Each year the Yidan Prize recognises individuals, or up to three-member teams, who make a profound contribution to education research and education development.

Laureates in each category receive HK$30 million as an award, and to advance their work in learning and education.

The prize has been awarded annually since its establishment by Dr Charles Chen Yidan, one of Tencent’s core founders, who launched it with a HK$2.5 billion endowment. The award and its related initiatives are administered in Hong Kong by the Yidan Prize Foundation.

Review, refocus, refresh

Following a review of its operations, the foundation sought to clarify its messages, enhance its brand identity and develop a new website. The objective was to present the Yidan Prize as an inclusive international organisation dedicated to advancing society through the future of learning and education, creating a better world.

The foundation subsequently invited brand building agency Stepworks to collaborate on the project.

The Stepworks and Yidan Prize teams worked together over several months. The initiative included a review of the recommendations of an independent academic consulting team. Following this, key messages were produced and sharpened.

These messages guided the development of the Yidan Prize website. The website was written, designed and coded by the Stepworks team, who applied a methodology that involved key members of the Yidan Prize team.

An effective brand foundation for an inspiring non-profit foundation

The Stepworks approach gave the Yidan Prize team all the tools necessary to further develop the brand, website and other channels.

Stepworks developed the highly customised website on a well-established CMS platform to give the Yidan Prize team complete control over the content. Brand guidelines produced by Stepworks will enable the Yidan Prize to achieve design and message consistency going forward.

Close cooperation and attentive project management resulted in a smooth and successful collaboration on a worthy endeavour that is building a better world through education.
